In this instance, the nonsense poem, "A Week Ago Cat," was voted the favorite poem in the collection. That position earned it the privilege of naming the book.
However, not everyone voted alike. Almost all of the other thirteen poems got someone's vote for first place. It was interesting to read the thoughtful reasons behind the choices—all of which goes to prove that poetry can speak in different voices to different people. What's dear to my heart may not be dear to yours. And that's as it should be. Poetry is a very personal thing.
Seven of these poems have traveled around the world in the pages of CRICKET magazine. One did the same in SPIDER.

A Collection of Poems with "a Little Vermont" in them.
For ages 7 to 12
Following in the footsteps of the ancient scribes, all the text and illustrations in A Week Ago Cat were written and drawn by hand, which means, except for the printing and binding, this is an old fashioned, handmade book.
Before we print at My Little Jessie Press, we always ask our young readers to evaluate our work.

Right field's a puddle
Left is a lake
Home is the Caspian Sea,
But we played
Some ball
In a half-spring thaw,
Tom Glennon,
Amy Fenny
And me.
There were others
Of course
And they're
All hoarse
With throats
As red as the sun.
And
Tom's in bed.
With a wicked
Stuffed head
And Annie's
A hundred and one,
I've got a nose |
|
That drips six quarts,
And mom's got
Me slathered
With goo.
I hack and I cough
I sneeze and I wheeze,
I take an aspirin
Or two.
Still -
It's not
All bad
I'm not
A bit sad,
A real good
Game is the reason,
Because
I, Sally Lou,
Slammin' Sally
To you,
Hit the first
Homerun
Of the season! |
